  • Keir Starmer visits Croydon

    Keir Starmer visits Croydon

Croydon is hitting the headlines because of the Mayoral election next month and Croydon residents can expect to see national figures from the main parties visiting Croydon to support their mayoral candidates.

Yesterday was the turn of the Labour Party who had a visit from party leader Keir Starmer to support Val Shawcross, the Labour candidate for Croydon’s first directly elected mayor.

After visiting Croydon police station and the Croydon Gudwara in St James’s Road, Sir Keir and Ms Shawcross went for a coffee in a popular South Croydon delicatessen, La Spezia.    Here he and Val Shawcross and Sarah Jones MP spoke with local residents and journalists about issues about policing issues relating to drug use and knife crime in the area.

Sir Keir agrees that the support of the council is vital in fighting crime. He said ‘we are going to fight for every vote, we are not complacent, we need to earn every vote’.  He stressed his support for Val Shawcross who he considers to be a great candidate.

Val Shawcross – wants to pursue new funding opportunities

Val Shawcross expressed her concern about the current approach of the Croydon administration to dealing with the financial crisis.  She stated that while council officers have been making the cuts, more effort needs to be made to raise much-needed funds from other sources.  She said ‘some of the cuts have been counter productive.  Croydon hasn’t been bidding for major external grants, its missed out on opportunities’.  She added later to The CRO that Croydon needs to have a council-wide policy to make the most of funding opportunities available through the Government’s levelling up strategy.

Sir Keir also spoke on national issues and was particularly scathing on the government’s new proposals to send refugees to Rwanda.  He said ‘I think it’s a desperate announcement, one whose purpose is distraction from the law breaking of the prime minister’.  He added ‘it’s unworkable, it’s extortionate, it’s going to cost billions of pounds, yes, it’s unethical.’

After the meeting Sir Keir stopped to chat with the owner of La Spezia, who came to Croydon from La Spezia on the Ligurian coast of Italy. Even a brief glance at La Spezia’s Trip Advisor profile gives some idea of how well regarded this cafe is.

Sir Keir and La Spezia owner Georgio chatting

Local resident Charlotte Davies said on her twitter account later ‘La Spezia is the hub of the community in South Croydon’ she described the owner Georgio as a man who ‘lives by his principles and supports many vulnerable people day by day, small act by small act.

  • Mayoral Candidates Farah London and Winston McKenzie – what’s the link?

Mayoral Candidates Farah London and Winston McKenzie – what’s the link?

The list of the candidates for the directly elected mayor of Croydon is now in the public realm and this new office has attracted 8 nominations. As well as the major parties, there are nominations from new parties and independents. It is a positive thing for the electorate to have a wide choice of candidates and there is an honourable tradition of independents and new parties standing in UK local government elections.

Winston McKenzie in his UKIP days

In March The CRO asked the question as to whether or not serial election loser Winston McKenzie was planning on taking another drubbing running as the first directly elected Mayor of Croydon. Mr McKenzie’s reputation is florid but he has given Croydon an extra serving of bizarre as he reappears in his new identity – His Excellency Dr Winston Mackenzie the UN Peace Ambassador. Not sure what the UN would have to say about this latest development. Thankfully for Croydon Mr McKenzie is standing as an Independent and not as a member of the far right UKIP or English Democrats as he has done in the past.

Meanwhile Farah London is on the list of candidates, standing on behalf of the Taking the Initiative Party. Her business background (or lack of it) has already been looked at in some depth by popular Croydon news site, Inside Croydon. However, the CRO took its own look at the Taking the Initiative Party website and was very interested to see that Marianne Bowness training their potential candidates at £45.00 per head for non party members. Who is Marianne Bowness? Winston McKenzie’s long term partner. Are Taking the Initiative aware of this?

  • Election round up 5th April 22 – Nominations close today

Election round up 5th April 22 – Nominations close today
What have little birds been telling the CRO?

Today the election gets real. After what seems like a very long wait after the result of the mayoral referendum nominations for the Croydon mayor and members of the Council will close today at 4pm.

Once the nominations close, the officers in the Electoral Services department at Croydon Council will verify the documentation and a list will be produced with the names of all the candidates standing this year.

Obviously there is a great deal of interest in the Mayoral vote and other than the current declared candidates there has been some speculation that there may be as many as 10 candidates putting themselves forward.

Other news that has dropped into the CRO’s mailbox is the effort by the Taking the Initiative Party’s candidate Farah London who has caused a stir by publicising her idea for Croydon’s first youth mayor and direct mailing Croydon residents asking for nominations. Bit of a problem with that as Croydon has already had its first youth mayor. William Awomoyi (pictured below with deputy youth mayor Shea Williams) had a dazzlingly successful term as the Young Mayor of Croydon before his move to study at the University of Cambridge. Mr Awomoyi was later elected as the UK Youth Ambassador to the Commonwealth.

Whoever has put their names forward the next few weeks will prove to be an interesting and exciting time for Croydon as we choose our first directly elected Mayor. Don’t forget to sign up for the CRO’s email updates to get the latest news from the election trail.

  • Friday warm fuzzies – Bootstrap Cook Jack Monroe loves Croydon food shops

Friday warm fuzzies – Bootstrap Cook Jack Monroe loves Croydon food shops

At the end of the working week it’s good to focus on positive things. Food writer, journalist and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe came to Croydon yesterday in search of pigs trotters and ended up restocking her fridge from Croydon’s huge array of food shops.

Jack Monroe didn’t want to leave!

Her delighted tweet about the huge variety of foodstuffs available in Croydon triggered off an exchange of comments from keen cooks about their favourite food shops and the interesting ingredients that Croydon residents have access to. Croydon’s diverse population businesses set up to cater to cuisines from all over the world and all sorts of new and adventurous foods are out there for anyone to try. Jack Monroe was particularly impressed with the shops in Church St where fresh meat, vegetables and fish are available in specialist shops.

    Surprised subscribers

Some of Jack Monroe’s subscribers were surprised by her haul of foodstuffs from Croydon and she enthusiastically recommended a number of stores to find items like maize meal, kimchi for £1, oxtail and even goat legs. The CRO will be watching her social media to see what she does with them.

Will Croydon be seeing Jack Monroe again soon?

Apparently Jack didn’t dare head in to Wing Yip on the Purley Way. The supermarket (and the brilliant Chinese restaurant in the same location) attracts customers from miles around – always a good idea to get there early if you are planning lunch in the restaurant after getting your shopping in. We are looking forward to Jack’s next trip to Croydon and seeing her creative work, especially with that oxtail!

  • Rotary Golf Day to remember Restaurateur and charity fundraiser Tony Man

Rotary Golf Day to remember Restaurateur and charity fundraiser Tony Man

The Rotary Club of Croydon are organising a charity golf day on Wednesday 18th May at the Croham Hurst Golf Club in South Croydon.

The golfers will be raising funds for the Crisis in Croydon Skylight Centre which helps former homeless people resettle after finding accommodation.

The event will not only be for raising charity funds but also to remember long term Rotarian Tony Man, a former president of the Rotary Club of Croydon.

Mr Man came to Croydon from Hong Kong and built a successful restaurant business from scratch. Along with his wife Rosemary who had a career in nursing and their family he was also very active in charitable work, wanting to give back to the town he had adopted as his own.

Despite being a businessman of some considerable substance, Mr Man was never happier than when playing host and taking care of his guests. At Croydon Rotary lunches he always ensured that members were served with coffee and tea before the after lunch speakers began.

Croydon Rotary president Oumesh Sauba said ‘Tony was a mainstay of Croydon Rotary and he will be very sadly missed. He loved the Golf Day and brought many friends from the Chinese Community to help raise funds which was terrific’.

He continued ‘A hugely successful golf day would be a fitting memorial to Tony from his friends in the Rotary’.

    Please contact Graham Harker (above)

The Golf Day entry fee of £70.00 covers the round of golf, coffee, bacon roll and a celebratory dinner in the evening where the prizes for the winning golfers will be given out and a grand raffle will take place.

Golfers can enter as teams or individually and if you would like to bring a team or just yourself along to the Golf Day, please contact Graham Harker on the addresses on the poster (right).

There are also tickets available for the prize giving dinner in the evening and these are available for £35.00.

  • Bars, cafes and maybe theatres in the sky? – Questions for Mayoral candidates

Bars, cafes and maybe theatres in the sky? – Questions for Mayoral candidates

It’s interesting to mooch around Twitter now and then to find out what Croydon people are talking about.

The CRO stumbled upon an interesting exchange about some of the new high buildings going up having some sort of bar, restaurant viewing platform function. One reader pointed out that if ‘the Croyds was Lisbon – they’d be everywhere’.

The thread started by a Mr Philip Glowinski said that ‘the views would be amazing’. The CRO is inclined to agree. Croydon has a some history with using roof top spaces. Croydon’s two major department stores in the middle of the 20th century, Grants and Kennards both had roof top terraces which they incorporated into their businesses.

Roof top cafe garden in Grants store with a view over Croydon Airport

Grant’s roof top garden was one of the three public spaces in this old Croydon department store. This rooftop terrace not only offered a cafe service and manicured flower beds, it also had a panoramic view over Old Town, Duppas Hill and the aircraft taking off and landing at Croydon Airport. Grants also boasted two restaurants, the Harlequin and the Devonian which also capitalised on the view from the rear of the building with floor to ceiling windows so that tea sippers could enjoy the sights.

Outdoor performance on Kennard’s roof space

Kennard’s roof was not quite as upmarket as Grants but there always something going on, from performances (left), two mini golf courses, pony rides and even a mini zoo to name only a few of the events that Kennards put on to attract customers to their store.

More recently, the roof spaces of multi storey car parks in Croydon have been used by the Lost Format Society as outdoor event space offering outdoor cinema, bars and some very funky sounds.

One Lansdowne (artists impression) only 40 smaller than the Eiffel Tower

Croydon has got some ideas for the future though. In 2017 Croydon Council gave planning permission to a two-tower and podium development at 1-5 Lansdowne Road. This development has a tower of 41 floors and a further tower of 68 floors. 288 metres up on the top floors of the proposed development there will be a viewing platform, a bar and a restaurant – the highest one in London.

There has been some doubt expressed here in Croydon about whether or not this development is ever going to get built, but a quick look at Croydon Council Planning Department’s website shows that smaller applications for the discharge of conditions prior to the commencement of construction have been submitted and approved.

The CRO thinks it is important that this application goes ahead as approved so would like to hear from the mayoral candidates in May’s election about how they will ensure that this (below) happens. The CRO’s email inbox is, as always, open.

  • Independent Andrew Pelling plays it safe joining 2 election races at once

Independent Andrew Pelling plays it safe joining 2 election races at once
Playing it safe – Councillor Andrew Pelling

There were no big surprises around Croydon overnight when the news filtered out that Councillor Andrew Pelling declared that he will be running for election as the executive mayor. Councillor Pelling will be running as an independent candidate.

Councillor Pelling has a long association with Croydon having lived here all his life. He has served as a Conservative councillor, a member of the Greater London Authority Conservative group, a Conservative MP, ran and lost a campaign to retain his seat in the House of Commons as an independent in 2010 after being expelled from the Conservatives in 2007, returned to the Council as a Labour councillor in Waddon and now sits as an independent councillor after being expelled from Labour.

Like his former Conservative colleague Jason Perry who intends running for his council seat as well as executive mayor, Councillor Pelling will also be running for his current ward Waddon as an independent. This would produce cost implications for the ratepayers should either Councillor Pelling or Councillor Perry be elected as both Mayor and a Councillor. This would create an immediate by-election for their council seat as sitting councillors are not able to be executive mayor in the authority they represent.

That being said, Councillor Pelling is familiar with multi-tasking, he juggled being a councillor, an MP and a member of the Greater London Authority at the same time for six years and was in concurrent receipt of salary for each public office.
